Topchanchi

Topchanchi is a small town located in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand. The place hosts one of the largest artificial lakes of India. The lake is nestled in the green hills and forests of the surrounding area. A number of species of fishes are seen in the waters of this lake. In the winter, hundreds of migratory birds from different countries come here which increase the beauty of the lake. Topchanchi has yet not made its place in the tourist map due to lack of publicity.

Many trains are running from Howrah to Dhanbad. Buses, minibuses, jeeps and trekkers are plying from there to Topchanchi. Direct buses are also available from Kolkata to reach Dhanbad.

Sambalpur

Sambalpur is an attractive weekend destination situated in the state of Odisha. It is famous for the Samaleswari Temple and Sambalpuri Sari. Hirakud Dam, the longest dam in Asia built across Mahanadi River is located 16 km from the heart of the city. Another tourist spot is the Buro Shib Mandir. Sutan is a tribal village inhabited by the Santhals, Munda and Bhumijra tribes. It is located at a distance of 60 km from Bankura. Forests of Sal, Palash, Mahua and Piyal surround the area. The main attraction for the tourists is the beautiful Sutan Lake. There is facility for boating in this lake. A watch tower has been constructed here to get a unmatched view of the surrounding forests. Sometimes wild elephants are also seen here which come here from Dalma Pahar.

One can reach Bankura by train from Howrah. From there you can get bus to reach Sutan village from Bankura.

Mirik

Mirik is a picturesque hill resort located in the district of Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal. It is situated at an altitude of 1767 m above sea level. The prime attraction of Mirik is the Sumendu Lake, surrounded by a garden on one side and pine trees on the other and linked to one another by an arched footbridge. Rasikbil

Diamond Harbour

Maithon

Maithon is the largest water reservoir of the Damodar Valley Corporation. The dam is located at the confluence of the Damodar and Barakar rivers in the border of West Bengal and Jharkhand. The place is surrounded by hills, forests and small islets. One needs to take permission to see the Maithon Hydroelectric Power Project.

Sightseeing and Activities

A colossal water body known popularly as the Maithan Lake was created as a result of the dam constructed by the Damodar Valley Corporation. Maithon lies at the confluence of Damodar and Barakor River. You can enjoy boating in the placid waters of the lake or just sit on the bank and savour the endless beauty of the place. There is a deer park and a bird sanctuary. During winter many migratory birds are seen in this sanctuary.

You can also visit Ma Kalyaneswari Temple which is situated in Hangla Pahar, 2.5 km from the dam. This temple is around 500 years old. The surrounding villages of Maithon are also beautiful. Panchet Dam is located 14 km from here and is worth seeing. You can also visit Garpanchkot by car.

The beauty and charm of Maithon is best enjoyed during the months of August to January.

How to Reach

Trains are available from Howrah to reach Kumardubi or Asansol. From Howrah, it takes approximately 4 hours to reach Kumardubi and 3 hours to reach Asansol. Maithon is 6 km from Kumardubi. Auto rickshaws are plying in this route. If you disembark at Asansol then you will get bus to reach Maithon. It takes about half an hour to reach Maithon, 24 km from Asansol.
