Oodlabari

A very popular tourist destination in Dooars area of West Bengal, Oodlabari boasts of astonishing natural beauty and vivid greenery. Situated in the midst of river Chel and Leesh, Oodlabari has become a very popular tourist destination of Dooars due to its unique location. On the west of the town is river Leesh and on its east is river Chel. Enclosed by meandering river streams and dense forest, Oodlabari is bestowed with abundance of Mother Nature. The view of lush tea plantations surrounding the quaint town of Oodlabari which stands against the backdrop of the towering Himalayas is a sight to behold. Just 47 km from Jalpaiguri, Oodlabari is blessed with nature's bounties in abundance. Lush green tea shrubs, dense emerald forests and burbling Himalayan rivers make this place look completely out of the world. Embraced by soothing greenery all around, Oodlabari brings a big relief from the mundane daily routine of city dwellers.


Things to do

At Oodlabari, life is slow and lazily. You will wake up to the call of birds. As you sip a cup of hot tea and look out of the window, you find a whole world of greenery waiting to be discovered by you. You can effortlessly take a walk on the forest trail and breathe in some pollution-free air while treating your eyes with the sights of untouched nature. Located in the periphery of Baikunthapur forest, Oodlabari is endowed with rich flora and fauna. Several tea gardens like Ranichera, Rungamatee, Gurjanjhora and Oodlabari tea estate are located at a close proximity to Oodlabari. The bank of river Chel where the junction of three river streams can be seen is a famous picnic spot close to Oodlabari. The place is ideal for spending some quality time with your loved ones. You can also visit the first water reservoir of Dooars region built in the Teesta Basin at Gajoldoba.

Gorumara National Park

Gorumara is located close to Oodlabari. An hour drive from Oodlabari, this forest covers an area of 79 square km. One can see rhinos, elephants, bisons, leopard, gaur, sambhar and many other species of deer here. You will also see innumerable peacocks dancing. There are four watch towers - Yatraprosad, Medla, Chandrachur and Chukchuki. In winter lots of birds can be seen at Chukchuki.

Baikunthapur Forest

The Baikunthapur forest located 5 km from Oodlabari. Legend has it that Lord Krishna with his principal wife and queen Rukmani chose Baikunthapur Forest for hiding, which is also the reason behind ISKON choosing the nearby town of Siliguri as the site for the biggest Krishna Centre in North East India. Revel in the beauty of this enchanting forest by going on a jungle walk. Listen to the melodious chirping of birds, smell the aroma of exquisite wild flowers and picnic on the bank of Chel River. And if you are lucky, you might even spot some untamed wild animals.

Gajoldoba

Gajoldoba is a tiny village on the western side of Teesta River, 18 km from Oodlabari. Located in close vicinity to the Baikunthapur forest, Gajoldoba is known for the Teesta River Barrage that was built for irrigation of agricultural land in the surrounding areas. The dam has resulted in the creation of a large water body upstream which has become a hotspot for migratory birds during the winter.

How to Reach

Trains are running from Howrah, Sealdah and Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri. Oodlabari is 40 km from New Jalpaiguri station. You can get a car from New Jalpaiguri to reach Oodlabari.

Mahishrekha

Mahishrekha Picnic Spot is located 4 km from Kulgachia station on the Howrah-Kharagpur Main Line. The place is situated on the banks of river Damodar. It is an ideal spot for picnic in Winter.

You can also go for a boat ride in River Damodar.

How to Reach

You can reach Kulgachia station from Howrah by train. Auto rickshaws and buses are available from Kulgachia to reach Mahishrekha Picnic Spot.

Sabuj Deep

Sabuj Deep is a magnificent picnic spot run by Hooghly Zilla Parishad and WBSFDC. The place is situated at a distance of 75 km from Kolkata. It is an islet located near Balagarh at the confluence of Behula and Hooghly rivers. Spanning over an area of 180 bigha, Sabuj Deep Picnic Spot is dotted with pine, palm, eucalyptus, teak, Mahogony and other trees. The picnic spot hosts a children's park, flower garden, restaurant and a view tower. You can also go for a boat ride in the river.

Sabuj Dwip remains open from 8 am to 6 pm.
Boat fare - Rs. 50/- per head.
Toilet and drinking water facilities is available here. There is a park too.
A few restaurants, tea and soft drinks stalls are set up during the peak season.
All arrangements for picnic has to be brought from Balagarh market.
There is no need to book the picnic spot in advance.

How to Reach

You can get trains from Howrah and Sealdah to reach Somra Bazar. From there you can take a van rickshaw ride to Sukhadia village. Sabuj Deep Ghat is located in Sukhadia village from where motor boats are plying to Sabuj Deep.

Machranga Deep

Machranga Deep is a small island situated in the middle of the Ichamati river near Taki in North 24 Parganas of West Bengal. It used to be an excellent picnic spot during the winter season. But nowadays, due to excessive mud and lack of proper infrastructure one can get on this island only during the high tide. Hence the picnic spot has been closed. However you can take a motor boat ride from Taki to go near the island.

Machranga Deep
Information

You can visit the island by motor boat from Taki.
Motor Boat Charges - Rs. 30/- per head, Rs. 600-800/- for full boat.
Several species of birds like parrot, bulbul and kingfisher are seen here.
Since it is impossible to picnic at Machranga Dwip, you can instead check out the wide range of picnic spots at Taki.

How to Reach

You can reach Taki Road station from Sealdah by Hasnabad Local. From there van rickshaws are available which will take you to Ferry Dock. You can reach Machranga Deep from there by motor boat.

Suakhal

Suakhal is a popular picnic spot which was developed by Hooghly Zilla Parishad. Spanning over an area of 8 acres, Suakhal Tourist Centre features an Energy Education Park. There are ample things for amusement at Suakhal. You will see Botanical Garden, Herb Garden, Flower Garden, Wonderland and many more things. There is boating facility and children's playground.

Entry Fee : Rs. 10/- per head
There are several cottages for resting purposes.

How to Reach

You have to reach Adisaptagram station from Howrah by train. The station lies on Howrah-Bardhhaman Main Line. From there you can reach Suakhal by rickshaw. Suakhal can also be reached from Serampore by bus (Route No. 12/C/1).

Swastikanan

Swastikanan is situated in Debanandapur in the district of Hooghly. It is a nice picnic spot which has come up at the birth place of famous bengali poet and writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The Sarat Smriti Mandir is located close to this garden.

How to Reach

Trains are running from Howrah or Sealdah to Bandel. From Bandel station you can get rickshaw to reach Swastikanan which is 50 km from here.

Shibpur Botanical Garden

Shibpur Botanical Garden situated in Howrah is one of Asia's largest botanical garden. During winter hundreds of people come here to see the various species of trees and plants. It is also a good picnic spot. Spanning over an area of 273 acres, apart from numerous trees and plants there are a number of water bodies and lakes which makes it more attractive to the visitors.

Picnic in the open grounds of the garden is strictly prohibited. There are two pavilions for picnic purposes. Charges for each pavilion is Rs. 350/-.
You have to bring all arangements for picnic from outside.
One has to book the picnic spot from the garden office a few days before the date of picnic.
You have to pay parking charges if you go by car.
Entry fee for entering botanical garden is Rs. 5/-.


How to Reach

A number of buses of Kolkata and Howrah go to Shibpur Botanical garden. You can also reach there by taxi or private car.

Wonder Land Park

Wonderland Park is situated in the city of Chandannagar. The park covers an area of 135 bighas. There are more than 200 picnic spots here. A garden, boating complex, children's park, fountains, toy trains and mickey mouse are added attractions of this park. Restaurants and guest houses are also there at Wonderland Park. You can buy arrangements for picnic from the local market. You can also roam around the city of Chandannagar which was once ruled by the French.

How to Reach

You can reach Chandannagar from Howrah by train. KMDA park can be reached by rickshaw or auto from Chandannagar station. If you go by car you have to take G.T. Road and after crossing Chandannagar Railbridge you will find KMDA Park on the left side of the road.

Bandel Church

Bandel is popular weekend destination for tourists. Bandel Church is famous for its picnic spot. The spot is located just behind the church. Situated at the banks of River Hooghly, the picnic spot offers a wonderful place for tourists to spend their weekend. All this makes Bandel Church flood with tourists during winter.

Naupala Picnic Spot

Naupala Picnic Spot is located between the districts of Howrah and Medinipur. Situated in the banks of the River Rupnarayan, Naupala is a wonderful picnic spot. The best time to go for picnic there is winter. You can also go for boating in the river.

How to Reach

You can reach Deulti from Howrah by train. Auto and Van Rickshaws are available from Deulti station to reach Naupala Picnic Spot. You can also reach Naupala by crossing the Rupnarayan River bridge over River Rupnarayan from Kolaghat station.

Shanti Sarovar

Shanti Sarovar is located near Shantipur in the district North 24 Parganas. A picnic spot has come up in the vicinity of this lake. Sonajhuri forest surrounds this lake. It is an ideal spot for picnic during the winter.

A cemented place is there for cooking purpose. There is a resting room too.
Book this picnic spot from Mohanpur Panchayet Office.
There are swings, slips and boating facility in the lake for amusement.
You have to buy things required for picnic from Barrackpore or Palta market.


How to Reach

From Sealdah Main Railway Station you can get local train and then disembark at Barrackpore or Palta. From here you can take auto which will take you to Mohanpur Shanti Sarovar Picnic Spot.

Kalyani Picnic Garden

Kalyani Picnic Garden is an excellent picnic spot situated in Nadia district of West Bengal. You can have picnic in the open ground or book sheds for picnic. Total 14 sheds are there. There is a children's corner consisting of slips, swings, seesaw etc. for entertainment of children. The garden is set in a natural ambiance surrounded by lots of trees. You can also visit Hanseswari Mandir or Tribeni from here.

Kenduli

Kenduli is a village which is situated on the bank of the river Ajay. Famous Vaishnab poet Jaidev Mishra was born in this place. An annual fair popularly known as Baul fair is organized here on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. It is an ideal picnic spot.

How to Reach

Buses ply between Durgapur station and Shibpur. The frequency of buses is good. Kenduli is located on the opposite bank of Shibpur. There is a bridge on the river Ajay. You can hire a car from Durgapur station to Kenduli.
