Ajgaivinath

Ajgaivinath Dham is a well known temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated in Sultanganj in the East Indian state of Bihar. The temple is situated atop a rock on the bank of Ganges river. It is believed that Lord Shiva was given his bow, known as Ajgay, at this very place and so the place came to be known as Ajgaivinath. A series of marvelous rock sculptures and inscriptions are the main highlights of the temple. Inside the temple, there are idols of various deities including Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Narayana and Goddess Laxmi. The place has a beautiful charm in it. Its calm natural surroundings and the soothing view of River Ganga will relieve your soul from all stress and worries.

Trains are running from Howrah and Sealdah to Sultanganj. Ajgaivinath Dham is 3 km from Sultanganj station. Trekkers and cycle rickshaws are available from Sultanganj station to reach Ajgaivinath temple.

Rajbalhat

Rajbalhat is a village situated in Srirampore Subdivison of Hooghly district in West Bengal. In the 16th century, Rajbalhat was the bustling capital of Bhursut dynasty's empire. The 16th century temple housing the idol of Devi Rajballavi, after whom Rajbalhat is named, is the prime attraction of the place. The Terracotta work on the walls of the temple is amazing. There are two other Terracotta temples at Rajbalhat - Radhakanta Temple and Sreedhar Damodar Temple. A number of ponds and open grounds are there beside the temples.

How to Reach

Local trains are running from Howrah to Haripal station. You can reach Rajbalhat from there by bus (Rt no 10). Rajbalhat is 22 km from Haripal.

Kamarpukur

Kamarpukur is a village in Hooghly district of West Bengal. The village is renowned for being the birthplace of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. He was born on 17th February 1836 in the village of Kamarpukur, into a very poor and orthodox brahmin family. The place has now become a pilgrimage destination for Hindus. A temple dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna is situated here which is the main attraction of the place. Other places of interest include Raghubir Temple, Yogi's Shiva Temple, Haldarpukur and the ancestral house of Sri Ramakrishna. You can also visit Vishalakshi Temple which is about 1.5 km from Kamarpukur.

Labhpur

Labhpur is a little-known weekend getaway near Santiniketan in Birbhum district of West Bengal. It is the birthplace of the famous Bengali writer, Tarashankar Bandopadhyay. Many of his novels and stories carry a vivid description of this area. A walk through the village roads will take you to the writer's ancestral house. The main attraction of Labhpur is the Fullara Devi Temple. This 100-year old temple is surrounded by dense foliage and believed to be one of the 51 Shaktipiths. Legend has it that the lower lip of Goddess Sati fell at the site of the temple. A huge pond situated near the temple adds to the beauty of the place. Every year, a 10-day fair is held at the Fullora temple during Magh purnima. Another attraction of Labhpur is the Daldali Lake.

How to Reach

Trains are running from Sealdah and Howrah to Bolpur-Shantiniketan. Labhpur is 50 km from Bolpur. Regular bus service is available from Bolpur to Labhpur. Alternatively, you can reach Ahmadpur from Howrah or Sealdah by train. Labhpur is 12 km from Ahmadpur.

Nalhati

Nalhati is a town in Birbhum district of West Bengal. The main attraction of Nalhati is the Nalateshwari Temple. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. It is one among the 51 Shakti Peeths. It is believed that Sati's throat had fallen at this place. There is a tiny hill behind the temple which houses the Ana Baba Mazar Sharif. From the top of the hill, one can get a view of the distant Rajmahal Hills.

Trains are running from Howrah and Sealdah to Nalhati. Nalateshwari Temple is 2 km from Nalhati Railway Station.

Kankalitala

Kankalitala Temple is located in Bengutia village in Birbhum district of West Bengal. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali and is regarded as one of the 51 Shaktipiths. It is believed that the waist of Sati had fallen in this place. Devotees consider this temple as very sacred. Every year on Chaitra Sankranti, a festival is held at Kankalitala. There is a cremation ground situated on the bank of Kopai River.

Trains are running from Sealdah to Bolpur. Rickshaws and buses are plying from Bolpur to Kankalitala. You can also take a rickshaw from Shantiniketan to reach Kankalitala.

Dhabaleswar

Dhabaleswar is a small island on River Mahanadi. It is located 27 km from the town of Cuttack. A temple dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva is situated here. The name of the island has been derived from the name of the temple. The place is serene and scenic. You can also go for a memorable boat ride in the river. Overall this is a good place to spend your weekend in serenity.

You can reach Cuttack from Howrah by train. Autos and rickshaws are available from the station to reach Badambari Bus Stand. Buses and cars ply from Badambari Bus Stand to Mangeshwar. There is a hanging foot bridge through which you can reach the island.

Kapilash

Kapilash situated at an altitude of 1575 ft is also known as Kailash of Odisha. The town of Dhenkanal is the gateway to Kapilash. A temple of Lord Shiva is located atop the hill. To get to the temple one has to climb 1390 steps. The way to the temple is thrilling with dense forests on both sides of the path. There is a motorable road too. The singing birds, colourful butterflies and amazing waterfalls will mesmerize you. A temple of Lord Vishwanath is also there in Kapilash. There is a small zoo at the foothills of Kapilash. It remains closed on Tuesdays. The Gharial Breeding Centre and Science Park are an added attraction to the tourists. You can go for boating in the lake situated beside the zoo.

How to Reach

Trains are running from Howrah to Dhenkanal. It takes about 7 hours to reach Dhenkanal from Howrah. Alternatively, you can also reach Cuttack from Howrah and Shalimar by train. From Badambari Bus Stand in Cuttack you can get bus or taxi to reach Dhenkanal, 21 km from away. Buses, trekkers and taxis are available from Dhenkanal in order to reach Kapilash.

Bakreshwar

Bakreshwar is a Shaktipith. It is said that the eye brows of Sati had fallen in this place. Many people come here to bath in the hotsprings. There are a total of 10 hotsprings here. The temperatures of these hotsprings are in the range of 63 to 80 degree Celsius. The hottest of these springs is Agnikund (temperature around 80 degree Celsius).

How to Reach

Bakreshwar is located 200 km from Kolkata. You can reach there by road directly. Or you can reach Bolpur by train and then from Jamboni bus stand you can get bus which will take you to Bakreshwar. Bakreshwar bound buses leave Jamboni bus stand every half an hour from 5:10 am to 03:10 pm. You can also board the Mayurakshi Fast Passenger and reach Dubrajpur. From there you can get bus or car and reach Bakreshwar.

Tarapith

Tarapith is a famous temple town situated in Birbhum district of West Bengal. It is believed that the eye ball of Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva fell at this very place during the Daksha Yagna incident. The walls of the temple of Tara Maa is built with red bricks. On the temple walls, one can witness superior carvings and intricate designs. The actual stone image of the deity is camouflaged by a 3-ft metal image, that the devotee usually see. Tarapith is also known for saint Bamakhepa also called the 'mad saint', who is held in great reverence in Tarapith and whose shrine is located in the vicinity of the temple. You can also visit the Nalhateswari Temple, Bakreswar and Massanjore from Tarapith.

You can reach Tarapith either by train or bus. Trains are running from Howrah, Sealdah and Kolkata station to Rampurhat. From Rampurhat, you can get trekkers and autos which will take you to Tarapith. Tarapith bound buses are also available from Esplanade bus terminus.

Mayapur

Mayapur was earlier known as Miyapur. It is an international pilgrim spot. There is a temple of ISKCON. The Sandhya Arati is even more beautiful and is worth seeing. Sri Chaitanya Math, Sujyipukur, Vrindavan Tamal Tree, Chand Kazi's Samadhi, Ballal Sen's Dhipi, Goswami Maharj Math, Sriram Angan, Shyamkund, Radhakund are the attractions of Mayapur. The temples of Mayapur remain closed from 12 pm to 4 pm.

How to Reach

ISKCON’s bus is plying everday from Kolkata to Mayapur. State transport buses are also running from Shahid Minar to Mayapur. You can also reach Mayapur by train. From Howrah you can board Katwa Local and disembark at Nabadwip Dham. It takes a little more than 2 hours to reach Nabadwip Dham. A rickshaw ride from Nabadwip Dham station will take you to Mayapur Ghat from where you will get a boat to cross the river and reach Mayapur.

Deoghar

Deoghar is a Shiva Dham. Its another name is Baidyanath Dham. Deoghar is one of the prominent pilgrim destinations of Jharkhand. It is a good place for those want to renew their health. This place is a very popular destination for bengali tourists. The best season to visit Deoghar is winter. The major attraction of Deoghar is Baba Baidyanath temple. Dolmanch, Harila Jori, Jain Temple, Kathikund and Kundeshwari Temple are among the most prominent attractions of Deoghar. Other attractions include Naulakha Mandir, Rikhia Yogashram, Tapovan, Nandan Pahar (Amusement Park) and Trikut Parvat. Tapovan and Trikut Parvat are small hills which have small temples located on their top. There is ropeway facility in Trikut Parvat. You can hire auto rickshaw to visit all these places in one day. Another tourist destination is the Basukinath Temple located 45 km from Deoghar.

How to Reach

You can reach Jasidih from Howrah by train. From here you can reach Deoghar by train, auto or bus. One can also reach Deoghar by bus. It takes about 11 hrs by bus.
