Oodlabari

A very popular tourist destination in Dooars area of West Bengal, Oodlabari boasts of astonishing natural beauty and vivid greenery. At Oodlabari, life is slow and lazily. You will wake up to the call of birds. As you sip a cup of hot tea and look out of the window, you find a whole world of greenery waiting to be discovered by you. You can effortlessly take a walk on the forest trail and breathe in some pollution-free air while treating your eyes with the sights of untouched nature. Located in the periphery of Baikunthapur forest, Oodlabari is endowed with rich flora and fauna. Several tea gardens like Ranichera, Rungamatee, Gurjanjhora and Oodlabari tea estate are located at a close proximity to Oodlabari. The bank of river Chel where the junction of three river streams can be seen is a famous picnic spot close to Oodlabari. The place is ideal for spending some quality time with your loved ones. You can also visit the first water reservoir of Dooars region built in the Teesta Basin at Gajoldoba.

Gorumara National Park

Gorumara is located close to Oodlabari. An hour drive from Oodlabari, this forest covers an area of 79 square km. One can see rhinos, elephants, bisons, leopard, gaur, sambhar and many other species of deer here. You will also see innumerable peacocks dancing. There are four watch towers - Yatraprosad, Medla, Chandrachur and Chukchuki. In winter lots of birds can be seen at Chukchuki.

Baikunthapur Forest

The Baikunthapur forest located 5 km from Oodlabari. Legend has it that Lord Krishna with his principal wife and queen Rukmani chose Baikunthapur Forest for hiding, which is also the reason behind ISKON choosing the nearby town of Siliguri as the site for the biggest Krishna Centre in North East India. Revel in the beauty of this enchanting forest by going on a jungle walk. Listen to the melodious chirping of birds, smell the aroma of exquisite wild flowers and picnic on the bank of Chel River. And if you are lucky, you might even spot some untamed wild animals.

Gajoldoba

Gajoldoba is a tiny village on the western side of Teesta River, 18 km from Oodlabari. Located in close vicinity to the Baikunthapur forest, Gajoldoba is known for the Teesta River Barrage that was built for irrigation of agricultural land in the surrounding areas. The dam has resulted in the creation of a large water body upstream which has become a hotspot for migratory birds during the winter.

Trains are running from Howrah, Sealdah and Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri. Oodlabari is 40 km from New Jalpaiguri station. You can get a car from New Jalpaiguri to reach Oodlabari.

Sabujban

Ajodhya Hills

Ajodhya Hills, an extension of the Dalma Hills of Jharkhand, is situated in Purulia district of West Bengal. The place is surrounded by forests of sal, teak and mahua trees. It is a picturesque getaway with hills, dales, trees, springs, lakes, river and clear blue skies. The tallest peak of Ajodhya Hills is Gorga-Buru (2850 ft). Ajodhya Hills is home to around 16,000 tribal people. Spanning over an area of 34,517 acres, the forest covering this hill houses various wild animals including leopards, elephants, deer and wolves.

Bamni Falls

Embraced by trees and rocks, this exotic waterfalls is undoubtedly the biggest attraction of Ajodhya Hills. Every year, a large number of tourists from Ajodhya Hills, Baghmundi and Murguma visit this place. A 20-minutes downward trek from the main road along a rocky and lightly-forested trail will take you to the front of the beautiful Bamni Falls. The cascading water falls over the rocks and form a small lake down below. You can even indulge in some shopping as there are many stalls near the road selling a variety of handicraft items and other stuff.

Marble Lake

Another must visit attraction of Ajodhya Hills is the Marble Lake which is also known as the Tarpaniya Lake. Once you reach the place, you will be mesmerized by the charming beauty of the place. This man-made lake was formed when the rocks here were quarried for stone to build irrigation dams. The Marble Lake is surrounded by towering walls of scraggy boulders overhanging the clear, azure waters. There are two points from where you can enjoy the lake's beauty - one is from the top, and the other one is from the side of the lake. Let the soft wind caress your face while you stand on the rock beside the blue water, tranquilized with romanticism and peace.

This is the main tourist area of Ajodhya Hills. Most of the hotels and restaurants are located in this place.

It is a hillock situated 4 km from Ajodhya Hill Top area. From the top, you can get a spectacular panoramic view of the entire range of Ajodhya Hills and its surrounding forests.

Located close to Bamni Falls, this waterfalls also attracts a lot of tourists. From the main road, you can catch glimpses of the gushing white waters through chinks in the forest cover.

Pakhi Pahar

This 800 feet high hill called Pakhi Pahar is a canvas for the artist, Chitta Dey, who along with his team, has sculpted nearly 65 images of birds on the sheer rock face. The hill has now become a hotspot for tourists who visit this place, only to be left speechless by the single-minded dedication and passion of the veteran artist. Encompassed by verdant forest, Pakhi Pahar is also a great spot for bird watching.

Upper Dam & Lower Dam

Both the upper and lower dams are part of the Purulia Pumped Storage Project (PPSP). These huge reservoirs are engineering marvels. Water from these reservoirs are used for hydroelectric power generation. The Lower Dam, especially, looks spectacular when viewed from the roadside viewpoint situated between the Upper Dam and Lower Dam.

Sitakunda

It is a tiny hot water spring, 1.5 km from Ajodhya Hill Top. According to the belief of local people, Rama and Sita had come to Ajodhya Hills and stayed during their exile. Sita was thirsty and so Ram pierced an arrow through the Earth's soil crust through which water gushed out. This place is now known as Sita Kunda.

Best Time to Visit

Ajodhya Hills can be visited all throughout the year except during the summer months of April to June. The place gets very cold and chilly during the months of November to January. February and March is the best time to witness the bloom of Palash flowers across the valley. And the monsoon season shroud the place in endless greenery with dark clouds rolling over the densely forested hills.

Trains are running from Howrah and Santragachi to Purulia. It takes around 5 hours to reach Purulia by train. Buses are also plying from Esplanade and Taratala to Purulia. Ajodhya Hills is situated close to Purulia town.

Garuchira

Garuchira is a picturesque village situated in the Terai region of West Bengal. The Indo-Bhutan Border is located very close to Garuchira. The main attraction of this place is its lovely natural beauty. The dense forests, rocky hills of Bhutan, orchid flowers and lush green tea gardens make Garuchira the ideal place for spending time amidst nature. Rivers Sukti and Khagra flow by Garuchira. South Khayerbari Nature Park

South Khayerbari Nature Park is a tiger rescue centre situated 15 km from Jaldapara. The park has been developed with the objective of treatment and rehabilitation of leopards and tigers. The leopards and tigers have been kept in a natural environment in this park. Battery operated cars are used to conduct safari tours in this nature park. River Buri Torsa is flowing through the South Khayerbari Nature Park. Boating can be done in the waters of the river.

Bhitarkanika National Park

Bhitarkanika National Park is situated in the Indian state of Odisha. It is the second largest mangrove forest of the country. Although tigers and elephants are not seen in this sanctuary but deer, wild pig, wild cat and birds are frequently observed. The number of different species of kingfishers is attractive. Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a large number of crocodiles. White crocodiles are also seen in this sanctuary. Every year the place where Brahmani River meets the Bay of Bengal gets full of Olive Ridley Turtles. They lay their eggs there and then go back to the Indian Ocean.

Trains are running from Howrah and Shalimar to Bhadrak. The journey takes about four and a half hours. Chandbali, the entry point to Bhitarkanika National Park is 50 km from Bhadrak. Private cars and buses are plying from Bhadrak to Chandbali. From Chandbali you have to hire a launch to get to the interior of Bhitarkanika Sanctuary. Permits for entering Bhitarkanika is issued from Khola, 16 km from Chandbali.

Amarkanan

Amarkanan is a nice weekend getaway in Bankura district of West Bengal. Situated at the foot of Koro Hill, this village is ideal for spending a day or two away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The main attraction of this place is the reserved forest. Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary

Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary is located adjacent to Kolkata. Situated beside EM Bypass Extension between Narendrapur and Rajpur, this forest is locally known as Kayal-r Bagan. Many species of birds live in the trees of this bird sanctuary. The Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary is home to numerous types of insects, moths and butterflies. Animals like civet cat and fox are also seen in this forest. The sanctuary remains open on all days from 7 am to 5 pm. The entry fee is Rs. 15/- per head.

Buses and auto rickshaws are available from Garia to reach Bhaskar Bhawan Stop. The sanctuary is 5 minutes walking distance from there.

There is no accommodation facility at Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary. As this sanctuary is in Kolkata, therefore there is no need to stay there.

How to Reach

You can reach Gadkhali from Science City via Ghatakpur and Sonakhali. From there launches and motor boats are available to reach Bali Island. It takes about one and a half hour to reach Bali from Gadkhali.
