Sajnekhali

Sajnekhali Island is nestled in the forests of Sunderban at the confluence of Matla and Gumdi rivers. The Sunderban Mangrove Interpretation Centre is located at Sajnekhali. There is a watchtower beside the tourist lodge. The spectacular view of the river and the surrounding forests is mind blowing. How to Reach

You can reach Canning from Sealdah by Canning Local. It takes a little more than a hour to reach Canning from Sealdah. From Canning you can get launch to go to Dockghat. From there you can get bus, auto or rickshaw to reach Sonakhali. From Sonakhali you can get trekker to reach Gosaba Dwip. From there ferry service is available to reach Sajnekhali. Or you can board Sonakhali bound buses from Babughat.From there you can get trekker to reach Gosaba Dwip and then ferry to reach Sajnekhali.

Manoharpur

Manoharpur is a nice weekend destination situated in the state of Jharkhand. Located near the confluence of Karo, Koena and Koel rivers, it is one of the gateways to the Saranda Forest. Walk on the serene banks of the river or approach the lonely hillocks, nature will be always by your side. There are some tribal villages in the vicinity of Manoharpur. You can also hire a car and a guide to go on a safari to the Saranda Wildlife Sanctuary.

Kuldiha Forest

Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Balasore district of Odisha and is great for a weekend trip. Covering an area of 227 sq. km, Kuldiha is separated from Simlipal National Park by Sukhuapata and Gagua hills. The forest is home to tigers, leopards, elephants, wild pigs, Giant squirrel and various species of deer. A number of birds are also seen in this sanctuary. One can find trees like shal, devdaru, shimul, shirish and mangrove etc in Kuldiha.

Asna

Asna is an ideal weekend destination situated in Bankura district of West Bengal. The place is calm and serene with forests and trees surrounding the area. Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the vicinity of Siliguri and is a paradise for bird lovers. The forest is also home to elephants. Sukna, the entry point to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is 10 km from Siliguri. The glimpse of Mt. Kanchenjunga through the dense bushes and trees of the forest add to the beauty of this jungle. Sukna Lake is situated inside the forest. During winter thousands of migratory birds visit this lake. The sanctuary remains open from 8 am to 4 pm. It is closed during monsoon season.

How to Reach

Trains are running from Sealdah, Howrah and Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri. The journey from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri takes around 10 hours. Auto rickshaws are plying from New Jalpaiguri to Siliguri. The sanctuary stands beside the road leading to Darjeeling from Siliguri. Buses, jeeps and taxis are available from Siliguri to get to Sukna.

Jayanti

Jayanti is a small forest situated near Buxa Tiger Reserve. The forest covers an area of 780 sq km. The unmatched scenery of the forest and the distant hills of Bhutan along with Jayanti River is the main attraction of tourists. The place is home to animals like elephant, leopard, tiger, wild dog and barking deer. Mahakal Temple is 7 km from Jayanti. It is one of the 51 satipeeths. You can visit Hatipota by car. The journey to Hatipota is thrilling and adventurous as you cross 3-4 rivers on the way. Another attraction is Pokhri Lake. The lake is situated on a hill, 2 km from Jayanti.

Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary

Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Munger district of Bihar. Situated at the foothills of Mahadev hill, this wildlife sanctuary covers an area of 681 sq. km. The forest of Bhimbandh hosts abundant Sal, Mahua, Shimul, Haritaki, Amlaki, Arjuna and other trees. The Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary is home to animals like leopard, tiger, sambhar, bear, bison, chital, wolf etc. Apart from these there are numerous birds in the forest. There are hotsprings adjacent to the wildlife Sanctuary. The waters of the hotsprings have a temperature of around 52°-62°C. The place is ideal as a weekend destination but still it is not much popular among tourists. There are several attractions near Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary including the Kumari Falls, Rameshwar Kund and Kharagpur Lake.

How to Reach

You can reach Bariarpur station from Howrah by train. BSRTC buses are plying from the local bus stand to Kharagpur. Jeeps are available from Kharagpur to reach Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary, 30 km from there.

Saranda

Saranda is a dense forest in the hilly regions of Jharkhand. The forest is situated at a height of 2000 ft and there are 700 hills in this area. The serene forests, hills, rivers, waterfalls and wild animals make Saranda, a nature lover's paradise. There are two hamlets on these hills - Kiriburu and Meghharaburu. These are inhabited by local tribal people.

How to Reach

You can reach Ghatshila from Howrah by train. Buses are available from there to Badojamda. From Badojamda you can hire jeeps to reach Kiriburu.

Kunjanagar

Kunjanagar is situated 7 km from the town of Falakata. The place is surrounded by rich forests and corn fields. There is a suspension bridge. On one side of the bridge is Kunjanagar and on the other side is Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary. River Torsa is flowing in the middle of Kunjanagar and Jaldapara. A watch tower is there for seeing wild animals. The view from the tower is awe inspiring. The popularity of Kunjanagar for boating is increasing rapidly in the recent years.

Rajabhatkhawa

Rajabhatkhawa is a small town located on the outskirts of Buxa Tiger Reserve. It is the main gateway to the tiger reserve. A Vulture Breeding Centre has been developed at Rajabhatkhawa by the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation (WBFDC). The place is surrounded by dense forest which gives an unmatched beauty to it. The green forests, grey hills, cascading river, roar of the tigers make Rajabhatkhawa an ideal spot for experiencing jungle tourism at its best. You can visit the nearby Buxa Tiger Reserve. Entry permits for the Tiger Reserve are issued from Nature Interpretation Centre at Rajabhatkhawa. One can go for a 5 km trek to Buxa Fort. You can visit Sikiajhora from Rajabhatkhawa via Damanpur where you can experience a boat ride through the Buxa Tiger Reserve. The forest of Chilapata and Jayanti is also worth a visit.

Chilapata

Raidak

Raidak Forest is situated near Alipurduar. On the way to Raidak one will see lush green tea gardens on the sides of the road. A number of species of birds such as parrots, koel, bulbuli, lalmunia are seen here. This forest is also inhabited by wild pigs, Gaur, elephants and several other animals. The calm forest, cascading rivers and majestic hills will make you mesmerized. You can also visit Raimatang and Bhutanghat (Indo-Bhutan Border) from here. Best time to visit Raidak is October to January. Raidak Forest remains closed from June to September.

Bethuadahari

Bethuadahari is a calm, serene and peaceful forest situated in Nadia district in the state of West Bengal. A wildlife sanctuary has come up at Bethuadahari which spans over an area of 165 acres. Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary is actually a deer park. Inside the forest you will see innocent deers grazing on the lush green grounds. More than 500 deers inhabit this forest. Other animals which are found in Bethuadahari include wild cats, peacocks, snakes and various species of birds. It is the perfect destination to spend your weekend. You can also visit Palashi, 24 km from here. The battle of Plassey was fought between Siraj Ud Daulah and Robert Clive at the grounds of Palashi. Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary remains open from 8 am to 4 pm.

Kulik Bird Sanctuary

Kulik Bird Sanctuary (Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary) is claimed as Asia's second largest bird sanctuary. Spanning over an area of 130 hectares this sanctuary is home to 164 species of birds including Asian Koel, Red Whiskered Bulbul, Munia, White Breasted Water Hen, Magpie Robin, Parakeet etc. Every year thousands of migratory birds visit this sanctuary during winter. There is a watchtower for bird watching. Apart from birds there are around 64 species of butterflies and various species of reptiles at this sanctuary. The best time to visit Kulik is from September to January.

Bangriposi

Bangriposi is a small tribal village situated beside Buribalam River in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. The hamlet is nestled in the Thakurani range of hills. Barodabri is situated at a distance of 3 km from Hasimara Air Force Base. Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is 15 km from here. Barodabri is a peaceful and serene forest. The coming and going of animals will make you mesmerised. The lush green tea gardens are an added attraction for the tourists. The best season to visit Barodabri is October to May. You can also visit the South Khayerbari Nature Park, 20 km from Barodabri. Other attractions include Buxa Tiger Reserve (60 km), Phuntsolling in Bhutan (20 km) and Kunjanagar Eco Park (30 km).

Badrama Wildlife Sanctuary

Badrama Wildlife Sanctuary also known as Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Sambalpur district of Odisha. Spanning over an area of 304 sq. km, this sanctuary is home to a large population of tigers, leopards, panthers, elephants, sloth bears, sambhar, chital and other species of deers. The singing of the birds will make you feel that you are never alone in this dense decidous forest. There are three watch towers for viewing wild animals. Best time to visit Badrama Wildlife Sanctuary is October to April.

Asanboni

Asanboni is a wonderful weekend destination in the state of Jharkhand. The place is calm and serene, situated at the foothills of Dalma hill. One can reach the top of the hill by car. From the hill top, the scenery of the surrounding places looks amazing. Asanbani is a perfect place to spend 2-3 days away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary

The prime attraction of Asanbani is the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. Established in 1975 and inaugurated by Sanjay Gandhi, the Dalma forest is a paradise for the native Indian flora and fauna. Especially known for its large population of elephants and deer, the sanctuary is quite an attraction for tourists visiting Asanboni. Lying in the catchment area of Subarnarekha river, the forest is also home to leopards, sloth bears and porcupines. Throughout the jungle, small hideouts have been built close to the ponds, which enables tourists to get a close glimpse of the wild animals as they arrive at the water bodies for drinking water. The Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary remains open from 7 am to 5 pm. You need to secure an entry permit from the sanctuary entrance at Makulakocha Check Post by paying the requisite entry fee. The entrance to Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is around 15 km from Asanboni. Tourists visiting the sanctuary can also visit the much revered Shiva Temple, perched atop a mountain. The temple invites plenty of devotees during the Shivratri festival.

Dimna Lake

Dimna Lake is an ideal place to spend some time away from the humdrums of busy life. Situated 8 km from Asanboni, this picturesque lake with its crystal clear water against a backdrop of Dalma Hills looks absolutely stunning. Constructed by Tata Steel, the dam is built on River Kharkai and primarily serves as a reservoir of water for the nearby steel plant as well as the residents of Jamshedpur city. Located at the foothills of Dalma mountain range, the lake is pretty well-known as a picnic spot with its clear water and scenic surroundings, creating scope for mini treks into the hills, and water activities such as boating, rowing, and jet skiing among many others A fabulous view of the sun rising from behind the hills, with luxuriant greenery and the cheerful chirping of birds is what sets this lake apart.

At a distance of 26 km from Asanbani lies the Chandil Dam, standing on the Subarnarekha River. The dam features a huge water reservoir punctuated with green hills and colourful boats. You can spend a nice time enjoying boating in the azure waters of the reservoir. The museum located near Chandil Dam is also worth a visit. It showcases some rich collections of 200 years old scripts inscribed on rocks. The Subarnarekha flows through this region.

Jayda Temple

Located on the serene banks of the Subarnarekha Temple near Chandil Dam, Jayda Temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Shiva. Built in the shikhara (spire) style of architecture, this colourful temple is adorned with two shikharas decorated with imposing shivlings and sculptures of Hindu deities. The best time to visit the temple is during Tusu Festival, when a grand fair is held. The jungles and the river banks lying in close proximity make for a great picnic spot, where one can relax and spend quality leisure time in the lap of nature. The temple is believed to be more than 50 years old.

Asanboni can be visited throughout the year. During the monsoon season, the adjacent Dalma hills get enveloped by lush greenery and rolling clouds. Winters are, however, much clearer, brighter and even more blissful.

How to Reach

Trains are running from Howrah to Tatanagar. Tatanagar lies on the Howrah-Mumbai Main Line and plenty of trains are available from Howrah to reach Tatanagar. It takes less than 4 hours to get to Tatanagar from Howrah. Asanboni is 17 km from Tatanagar. You can reach there by hired car.
