Purbasthali

Purbasthali is a small town in Burdwan district of West Bengal. It is located at a distance of 120 km from Kolkata and 145 km from Howrah. The place is also known as Chupir Chor and is a paradise for bird watchers. The prime attraction of Purbasthali is the beautiful oxbow lake created by the River Ganga. There is boating facility in the lake. Various species of birds such as Lesser Whistling-duck, Red-crested Pochard, Kingfisher, Osprey, Little Cormorant, Great Egret and Spoon Bill are sighted in this lake. The place also attracts a number of migratory birds during the winter months.

How to Reach

You can reach Purbasthali from Howrah and Sealdah by Katwa Local. Purbasthali Lake is 3 km from Purbasthali station. Van rickshaws are plying from the station to the lake. If you want to drive to Purbasthali, then take NH34 and reach Nabadwip via Krishnanagar. Purbasthali is 8 km from Nabadwip and is easily accessible via Parulia More.

Mulkharka

Mulkharka is a beautiful hill hamlet situated in North of West Bengal. The village is mainly inhabited by the Sherpas. The prime attraction of Mulkharka is the Mulkharka Lake also called Manokamna Lake (Wish Fulfillment Lake). The lake is considered very sacred by the Lepchas. The reflection of Mt. Trains are running from Sealdah to New Jalpaiguri. Cars are available from New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri to reach Aritar. Mulkharka is a 6 km trek from Aritar.

Deulghata

Deulghata is an amazing weekend destination located 18 km from Purulia in West Bengal. The place is situated on the banks of the Kansabati river and hosts several ancient Jain temples many of which are now in a ruined state. The exquisite terracotta works and intricate designs on the walls of the temples are worth seeing. The historical atmosphere and lush greenery surrounding Deulghata make it an ideal weekend gateaway from Kolkata.

How to Reach

Trains are running from Howrah to Purulia. Buses are also plying from Kolkata (Esplanade Bus Terminus) to Purulia. Buses and cars are available from Purulia to reach Joypur. Deulghata is just 1.5 km from Joypur.

Hatibari

Hatibari is an amazing weekend destination located on the borders of the states of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha. The place is surrounded by small hills and lush greenery. River Subarnarekha flows through the place. The chirping of birds in the forests of Sal, Piyal, Teak and Eucalyptus trees make the environment of Hatibari mesmerizing.

Sightseeing and Activities

You can spend your time watching the fishing boats in the waters of Subarnarekha river. Gopiballabhji's Temple is a must see attraction from Hatibari. Trains are running from Howrah to Jhargram. It takes 2-3 hours to reach Jhargram. Hatibari is 62 km from Jhargram. Buses are plying from Jhargram Bus Stand to Hatibari. One can also reach Hatibari directly from Kolkata by Keonjhar bound buses.

Rongo

Rongo is a tiny hill hamlet situated in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. The village lies near the Indo-Bhutan border at an altitude of 4500 ft above sea level. Rongo is famous for Cinchona plantations and growing of medicinal plants. The bird's eye view of the surrounding hills, dense forests and river valley of Jaldhaka from Rongo is mesmerizing. Rongo is also the gateway to the Neora Valley National Park.

How to Reach

Trains are running from Sealdah to New Jalpaiguri. Siliguri is located very close to New Jalpaiguri. You can hire a car from Siliguri and reach Rongo via Chalsa, Khunia More and Gairibas.

Takdah

Takdah is a British Cantonment located 27 km from Darjeeling in West Bengal. It lies at an altitude of 4000 ft above sea level. Takdah is famous for its lush green tea gardens. Trains are running from Sealdah, Howrah and Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri. The journey from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri takes around 10 hours. Auto rickshaws are plying from New Jalpaiguri to Siliguri. Takdah is 70 km from Siliguri. Hired cars are available from New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri to reach Takdah. Shared jeeps are also plying from Darjeeling and Ghum to Takdah.
